Things to Do

Karumba is an iconic town located at the mouth of the Norman River in the Gulf of Carpentaria renowned for its Barramundi fishing, crabbing and bird watching and lots of opportunities for photography and enjoying our outback by the sea natural environment. The only town where you can access the Gulf coastline with fully sealed roads.

Did you know we only have 1 tide a day for exampe? There is a lot to find out.

2023 saw Karumba celebrating its 150th Anniversary – so there is a lot of rich, raucous and fascinating history, heritage and local stories. There is a Heritage Trail covering both the Karumba town and Karumba Point areas with some 30 history/heritage signs. The walking track connecting town to Karumba Point is approx. 3.5km one way and takes you through mangroves and out onto the flood plains – connecting the town side along the Norman River frontage to Karumba Point either exiting on Fielding Street or following along the Sunset Caravan Park and 100metre timber mangrove boardwalk to the mouth of the Norman River.

The Les Wilson Barramundi Discovery Centre is a must when you come to town – self guided walk through or organised tour plus you can include feeding the Gulf Saltwater Barramundi as part of the experience. Check out all the information here

You may be interested in going for a Sunset River Cruise, Croc spotting adventure or fishing charter? It is highly advisable to book any of these activities well before you arrive in Karumba as demand is high through the season.

In Karumba we also have a community recreation club which operates a 9 hole golf course with sand greens – clubs are available for hire with an honesty box in place.

To take the kids somewhere to enjoy there are several park areas and a main playground which is located beside Karumba’s Water Park and swimming pool (check hours open on Carpentaria Council website) – plus walking the coastline and exploring the beaches is always fun – just remember – ‘no toes in the water’.
